"Smokey"

4 year old Alaskan Malamute cross

Smokey is a happy, friendly boy despite his past neglect, but his new owners will need to understand that adjusting to a regular life may take some time and effort. Smokey has been living on a chain with virtually no human contact until we took him into our care.

Smokey has lacked the experience of bonding with people and as such it will likely take him longer to understand what is required of him as a doggie family member. In saying that he is very keen for human attention and shows great interest in interacting with his foster carers. He’s also very food motivated which will no doubt help him learn quickly.

At present Smokey displays an excellent case of the very well known arctic “selective hearing”. He is used to having to look out for himself and being left up to his own devices so if it doesn’t seem worth doing to him then he probably ain’t going to do it ? and who can blame him.
Smokey will do best in a home that is experienced with training in a calm, firm and consistent manner. He will need ongoing training and does push the boundaries to see what he can get away with so it’s important that all members of his new family are on the same page. For this reason he would not be suitable to a home with young children.

Smokey does allow full handling and didn’t mind bath time at all.

He’s an active boy and would be a great jogging companion or could even be trained to run in harness quite easily.

Smokey is under-socialised with other dogs which means he can be selective about who he likes to share his space with. He may be suited to a friendly, quiet female companion of similar size but he could also benefit from being an only dog where the focus can be on him whilst working on his socialization.

True to breed nature Smokey has very high prey drive and is not suited to living around cats, chickens or pocket pets. He has also been known to dig which is not surprising considering his previous lack of stimulation. This may become less of a habit with appropriate exercise, human interaction and toys… or it may not ? Both of these traits means that Smokey will need a secure yard with 6ft fencing and the ability to dig-proof if required.
